The name

A seat by the fire

In the old villages of the Cordillera, the dap-ay (the ato, to the Bontoc) is a stone-paved circle among the houses: flat stone seats around a hearth. The elders sit there to talk things through and settle them. People gather there in the early morning and at dusk, and the young learn how things are done by listening. When there's something to celebrate, the gangsa come out.

These games are named for it: somewhere to sit together, keep the fire going, and play a round with the people around you.
